Keeneland kick-starts new sales season

          AFTER a brief Christmas period break, the bloodstock sales season kicks off anew on Monday with Keeneland's January Horse of All Ages Sale. However, in a departure from the trend seen at nearly all major sales, the auction has decreased in size.

A total of 2,547 horses make up the seven-day sale, which ran to eight sessions last year after 2,933 lots were catalogued. The 1,201 broodmares represent the bulk of the catalogue, but there are also 862 short yearlings, 482 horses of racing age and two stallions.

Highlighting the sale is the dispersal of Ogden Phipps's daughter, Cynthia, who died from injuries she suffered in a fire in her Manhattan apartment..... Read more...

 BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, Breeders' Cup Classic winner Curlin and Derby runner-up Hard Spun were among the Eclipse Award finalists announced Friday.

The three rivals were nominated for 3-year-old male of the year honors. Curlin's other victories last year were in the Arkansas Derby and the Jockey Club Gold Cup.
